SGU Collection

  • The purpose of this SGU Collection is to preserve the memories and stories of the Hmong American’s greatest generation: The Hmong SGU Veterans.

  • A major effort for the SGU organization is to collect, document, and preserve our Hmong SGU veterans’ stories, artifacts, and documents. This collection will help U.S.-born Hmong generation, institutions, and the public learn and understand more of the sacrifices the Hmong veterans have made to the Southeast Asian nations and U.S.’ Vietnam War histories.

SGU has began to research and document names and photos of veterans and their widows. However, there is limited record on the 35,000 Hmong SGU soldiers killed during the Secret War. SGU wants to gather as many names as possible of both the deceased and living to honor and recognize their contributions to democracy and to the free world. Moreover, SGU has linked to other Hmong and Hmong-related collections from different institutions with the hope to enrich researchers and scholars who are seeking for more information. These materials are important for archival, legacy, education, and research purposes.

This work will need the support and contribution of the Hmong community and organizations across the U.S. If you, your father, brothers, or uncles were veterans of the Secret War in Laos, SGU would like to add their names, photos, and any artifacts (that you or they would like to donate) to this collection.

For American veterans who fought in the Secret War, SGU is also interested in collecting your stories and materials. Together, we can preserve the legacies of all those who have made contributions to our Hmong American and Secret War stories.

  • The contents in this “SGU Collection” are subjected to copyright laws. For the usages of any of these materials (i.e. online and print publications), you may contact the SGU Organization, the collectors, and the institutions where the contents are originated. SGU recommends that you consult with “Copyright Office” prior to additional or fair use.

The images, texts, and documents appeared in this collection are intended for both educational and non-educational use, and to raise awareness about the importance of preserving family histories and stories.

“What I am afraid of most is that when my generation dies, their legacies and stories will die with them. Without knowledge of our Hmong veterans’ legacies, we will not know who we are in the future.”
