Lima Sites in Laos
———————————

The Lima Sites (LS) were constructed on the remote villages and hilltops, which were designed as landing strips for short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircrafts. They were used by the CIA, Air America, and U.S. military to supplying and resupplying allied troops at the frontlines and for emergency landings for U.S. pilots flying from the war in Vietnam. There were more than 400 of these sites created in Laos, with the most renowned one being Lima Site 85 at Phou Pha Thi — where the CIA installed a tactical air navigation system (TACAN) to guide accurate U.S. bombing missions in Northern Laos and North Vietnam. Visit this Google interactive map to locate a site. This document was from the SGU Collection.
