Lee Vang was born in Laos, and after the war him and his family escaped communist attacks and went into hiding in the jungle of Laos. Vang was captured and held in prison for some years. He managed to escape. Vang and his family eventually arrived in the refugee camps in Thailand. “I was very poor when I arrived in Thailand, he remembered. “I became a monk so that my stomach doesn’t go empty.

Later on, they were relocated to the Wat Tham Krabok monastery. In 2004, they were among the 15,000 Hmong refugees from the monastery to come to the U.S. He now lives in Minnesota.
