Mai Vue lost her parents as a child. She grew up as an orphan and was raised by her grandparents. She helped with household chores and farm labor. In her late teens, Mai was engaged to Captain Shoua Ker Lo, who would be her protector. She would then marry him. She saw the pains that the Secret War had brought onto her, her family, and Hmong people. After the Secret War ended in 1975, she lost her children when the enemy attacked their village. With resilience and a strong will to live, she eventually made it to Thailand with her husband. Life in Thailand was discouraging. In 1989, she and her family decided to immigrate to the US. They first settled in Wisconsin, and now she calls St. Paul, Minnesota, home. ∆
