Youa True “Steve” Yang was among the many early Hmong recruits into the CIA-sponsored Secret War in 1962 and over the next 13 years, he fought and experienced plenty of combat. In 1975, when the war concluded, he and his family took off to Thailand to seek safety. Their documents were processed and they were granted immigration to the US. In 1976, they landed in Missouri and Yang began working as a janitor—for $2.25 an hour—within three days after his arrival. Yang and his family eventually moved to Minnesota to join other family members. ∆
